Discover and Explore your Passion – Annual High School Special Event Series

We invite you to embark on a journey of metaphors and similes, creation and exploration, rants and raves, snaps and claps and infinite fun! You will enjoy workshops taught by our acclaimed faculty, an inventive keynote speaker, an awards ceremony to unveil the poetry winners and more. As in years past, students can participate in an open-mic poetry slam that is sure to be electric. This event features published author and winner of a Global Filipino Literary Award, Joseph O. Legaspi as this year’s keynote speaker.

The event is free and open to all high school grade levels and is held at Adelphi’s Garden City campus.

Joseph O. Legaspi is the author of the poetry collections Threshold (forthcoming fall 2017 and Imago, both from CavanKerry Press; and two chapbooks, Aviary, Bestiary (Organic Weapon Arts), winner of The Blair Prize, and Subways (Thrush Press). His works have appeared in the Academy of American Poets’ Poem-a-Day, POETRY, New England Review, Orion, jubilat, and the anthologies Language for a New Century (W.W. Norton), Coming Close (Prairie Lights/University of Iowa Press), among others. He is a recipient of fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, and a Filipino Global Literary Award. He co-founded and currently serves on the Board of Kundiman, a non-profit organization serving Asian American writers. He lives in Queens, NY.

Poetry Contest Submissions

To submit poetry to the poetry contest, please be sure to follow the instructions listed below. Any materials received that are not in accordance with these guidelines may be disqualified.

  • Students may submit up to five pages (single-sided) of poetry (one poem per page for a maximum of five poems).
  • The following information must appear on the front page of the student’s manuscript:
    • Student’s name
    • Student’s grade
    • High school
    • Teacher
    • Title of manuscript
  • The following information must appear on each page of poetry:
    • Student’s name
    • High school
    • Student’s grade
  • Students must participate in Poetry Day to receive an award. All students must attend Poetry Day with a faculty advisor.
  • All Poetry Contest submissions must be emailed to by Friday, March 24, 2017 with the subject “Poetry Contest”.
